Liver Disease & Hepatitis

Hepatitis infection primarily affects the liver, causing significant damage that may lead to cirrhosis or liver scarring. Our clinic  recognizes the body as an integrate whole, which means that the liver doesn’t operate in isolation, but functions in harmony with other internal organs to purify blood and nourish the body. For patients dealing with chronic Hepatitis B infection, we aim to identify each of our patients distinct syndrome patterns. We use acupuncture points and Chinese herbs to address deficiencies not only in the liver but also the organs that are interconnected with the liver. Our approach to treating Hepatitis infection is to address the pathogenic forces such as toxic Heat and Dampness invading the body. We tailor our treatments to the various states of Hepatitis with a combination of herbs, acupuncture, and moxibustion specific to the infection stage and the unique pattern of symptoms. Acupuncture treatment for HBV or HCV focuses on strengthening the liver, spleen, and kidneys, clearing any dampness or excess heat from these organs, and enhancing blood circulation throughout these systems.

Chinese herbal formulas also help enhance spleen function to aid in virus elimination and liver healing. Additionally we may prescribe diet and nutrition plans, as they both play a crucial role in strengthening and detoxifying the liver and other organs.

Different TCM differentiations of Hepatitis include:

  • Liver Qi stagnation: Characterized by symptoms like nausea, poor appetite, and abdominal distension or bloating.
  • Spleen and/or Kidney Yang deficiency: Associated with poor appetite, loose stools, a sallow complexion, weakness, muscle loss.
  • Liver–Gallbladder Dampness and Heat: Leads to jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin), fever, and nausea.
  • Liver–Kidney Yin Deficiency: Indicated by symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, irregular periods, stiff joints, poor sleep, irritability, and ringing in the ears (tinnitus).
  • Blood stasis: Involves the accumulation of blood in the liver, contributing to fibrosis or cirrhosis, and causing lower rib pain, menstrual problems, PMS, and depression.
