Substance Abuse
The use of acupuncture in addiction treatment began in China during the early 1970s when a Chinese physician observed its potential to alleviate withdrawal symptoms in individuals struggling with opiate abuse. By strategically inserting and manipulating needles at meridian points, acupuncture helps reduce cortisol levels and balance dopamine production, which diminishes withdrawal symptoms and cravings experienced during drug and alcohol detox.
A specific acupuncture protocol, known as NADA or AcuDetox, was developed by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association approximately 40 years ago. Research has shown that AcuDetox is a valuable tool for addiction treatment, acting as a complementary approach alongside conventional methods like cognitive behavioral therapy. Many modern therapeutic programs for substance abuse recovery incorporate NADA into their techniques.
We have observed the effectiveness of acupuncture for substance abuse in several ways, including easing the discomfort of drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms, increasing the likelihood of completing addiction treatment programs, enhancing the chances of maintaining sobriety post-treatment, improving overall quality of life, and boosting energy levels.
We aim to support our patients who are struggling with addiction by working with their central nervous system to alleviate common withdrawal symptoms, such as cravings, insomnia, muscle aches, anxiety, depression, and digestive issues. By providing a greater sense of calm and well-being and reducing the severity of withdrawal symptoms, we have been able to support individuals to focus on their treatment and recovery efforts. We strive to help our patients prevent relapse, and lessen their desire to return to substance use to alleviate withdrawal symptoms.
